New Delhi: The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has finally spoken out about the controversy surrounding the film Toxicdirected by Geethu Mohandas. The film which stars Kannada actor Yash drew criticism after its promo video was accused of objectifying women and perpetuating misogyny.

Critics pointed to Geethu’s earlier stance against films like cassavawhich were deemed sexist, calling out the apparent hypocrisy in her portrayal of women in Toxic. Scroll down to read about the full controversy and WCC’s response!

WCC on Geethu Mohandas’ Toxic

At the Kerala Literature Festival, WCC member Miriam Joseph addressed these issues head-on. She explained that the organisation often holds internal discussions about such matters, but these conversations aren’t meant for public consumption. Miriam stated, “If there is anything to be said to Geethu, it will be done within the organisation.” As reported by Manorama, she further highlighted that WCC isn’t in the business of ‘policing’ filmmakers, as that’s not the group’s purpose.

In her statement, Miriam also took aim at the selective criticism that women filmmakers face. She questioned why WCC is scrutinised for such matters when similar content created by male directors often goes unchallenged. “Why is it that when a male director creates a sexist trailer, we don’t hear the same criticism? Why is it only WCC that gets questioned?” she added, “We are just like any other filmmakers, trying to make meaningful art. Some things need to change, and so do certain mindsets.”

Controversy over Toxic promo

The controversy erupted when the teaser for Toxic came under fire for its portrayal of the female body. Some critics accused the film of presenting misogynistic undertones despite Geethu’s previous outspokenness against such content. The film’s promotional video was labelled sexist, causing quite a stir within the industry. However, it was later clarified by director Nithin Ranjith, who posted an Instagram story explaining that any interpretations of sexism were revised once the film reached other states.

Miriam also made it clear that the WCC is committed to addressing these issues within its ranks. “Geethu Mohandas is still a member of the organisation,” she stated after reassuring everyone that any internal concerns would be handled privately.
