In contrast to other roads constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the expressway was constructed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and formally inaugurated in 2002. It was officially recorded as the nation’s first six-lane motorway.

Because it links Mumbai and Pune, two of Maharashtra’s largest cities, the expressway gained attention. Pune is Maharashtra’s center for IT and education, whereas Mumbai is considered the nation’s financial center. Residents of these cities greatly benefit from the Mumbai-Pune expressway, which also significantly increases the state’s revenue.

Even though the expressway is just around 94.5 km long—shorter than the majority of India’s mega-expressways—it nevertheless brings in a lot of money.
