India’s economy is among the fastest-growing in the world, and in recent years, the nation’s infrastructure has grown remarkably. In the next fiscal year, the federal government has also set aside a significant portion of its budget for the building of roads and motorways. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway stands out as the most lucrative expressway in 2024, even if a number of expressways have brought in money for the government.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is the most popular toll collection route.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway topped the list of the roads with the most toll tax revenue in December 2024, according to statistics made public by IRB Infra Trust. According to the statistics, Maharashtra’s expressway generates more revenue than the combined revenue of many of the state’s best expressways.
According to the statistics, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway alone brought in Rs 163 crore in taxes, compared to Rs 580 crore for all of the nation’s roads combined. According to Zee News, the astounding sum makes it the nation’s most lucrative motorway. In December 2023, the highway brought in Rs 158.4 crore.
In contrast to other roads constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the expressway was constructed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and formally inaugurated in 2002. It was officially recorded as the nation’s first six-lane motorway.
Because it links Mumbai and Pune, two of Maharashtra’s largest cities, the expressway gained attention. Pune is Maharashtra’s center for IT and education, whereas Mumbai is considered the nation’s financial center. Residents of these cities greatly benefit from the Mumbai-Pune expressway, which also significantly increases the state’s revenue.
Even though the expressway is just around 94.5 km long—shorter than the majority of India’s mega-expressways—it nevertheless brings in a lot of money. According to the statistics, the combined revenue of the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway and NH48 in December 2024 was Rs 70.7 crore, which is less than this expressway’s profits.
