If you live in a flat without a but still want to put your green-fingered skills to the test, investing in some is a great way to do this.

However, for those of us with limited space, it isn't always possible to fill up your windowsills with greenery.

It's a well-known fact that there are many that need a lot of sunlight in order to survive.

However, there are also certain varieties that can thrive even in low-light environments.

That's according to Michael, also known as , who has racked up more than 266k followers thanks to his simple tips on how to improve your plant care skills.

In a recent video, he said: "We all want more houseplants, but we haven't got unlimited windowsills to make sure they get lots of light.

"So here are my top five houseplants that are more than happy in low light."

ZZ plant

This plant, which is also known as its full name Zamioculcas zamiifolia, is an excellent choice for rooms that don't get a lot of natural light.

Michael said: "With glossy upright evergreen foliage, it can cope with a lack of water and will grow in low light levels."

Madagascar dragon tree

This beautiful plant, with its striking spiked leaves, doesn't just look great - it's also ideal for darker rooms too.

According to Michael, it stores water in its trunk so therefore doesn't need a lot of care, and thrives in low light levels. However, it's worth noting that it can be toxic to pets if ingested, so be sure to keep it away from animals.

Philodendron

Also known as the heart leaf plant, this variety looks beautiful trailing down from a shelf - but it can also be trained to trail or climb.

Experts at have hailed it as the 'perfect' plant for beginners as it's 'super hardy', producing gorgeous heart-shaped leaved on long vines.

Parlour palm

This plant variety is another great choice for any newbies, as it has been hailed as 'unkillable' by experts. Michael says it's a compact indoor palm with light green fronds that is tolerant of low light levels and dry air.

Not only this, but it's also excellent for purifying the air around your home and drawing out any toxins - so it could be worth putting one in your bedroom.

Prayer plant

Finally, this interesting houseplant boasts leaves which actually close over at night, but don't let this put you off. Michael said: "They're a little fussy on the care front, but worth it for their bold and striking foliage."

It's ideal if you want to add a little more colour to your home, as the leaves have striking red veins with pink undersides, and they can also be trained to trail or grow horizontally.
