The latest episode of Call the Midwife saw the return of Cyril Robinson (Zephryn Taitte), who had journeyed to Jamaica to reunite with his estranged wife Lucille (Leonie Elliott).

Cyril's sudden departure from Poplar left viewers in suspense over his blossoming romance with Rosalind Clifford. However, he has now made a dramatic comeback, bearing some heart-wrenching news.

In a heartfelt conversation with Mrs Wallace, he revealed: "Lucille asked me for a divorce, she doesn't wish to return to London, and I do not wish to live in Jamaica."

This revelation was a significant blow to fans who have been following their relationship since season eight, when the smitten couple agreed to their first date. Viewers were deeply invested as they watched the pair exchange vows during the 2021 Christmas special.

Since their wedding, Lucille and Cyril have faced several relationship hurdles, including a devastating miscarriage that led her to leave East End London for a fresh start in the Caribbean, reports .

Lucille's move to Jamaica was initially intended to be temporary, a brief respite to process her miscarriage. However, much to the audience's surprise, her decision to stay appears more permanent than previously thought.

Lucille has secured her dream job at a maternity ward and has decided to extend her stay in the country.

Cyril's solo return and reluctance to move sparked speculation that it might signal the end of their marriage, and potentially Lucille's departure from the show.

Mrs Wallace, eager to repair the relationship, questioned Cyril: "Is there not a compromise you can reach?" He quickly dismissed the possibility: "I'm afraid not."

Amidst fears for his pastoral position due to the potential scandal of a divorce, Mrs Wallace offered comfort: "Don't worry about what other people will judge to be right or wrong. You can only do as you judge, in your heart."

As the episode concluded, viewers on social media site X were sharply divided over Lucille and Cyril's split. While one viewer applauded: "Lucille is currently living her best life. living in Jamaica with her family, has got a job and is divorcing her annoying husband."

Another expressed satisfaction: "CYRIL AND LUCILLE ARE DIVORCING. FINALLY. Now we can has Rosalind and Cyril," but a third lamented: "Sad that Lucille won't back #callthemidwife."

Some fans voiced their disappointment: "I'm sorry they've done all this to Lucille's character #CallTheMidwife," and others expressed dismay: "NOOOO LUCILLE AND CYRIL WERE PERFECT TOGETHER #callthemidwife."

Call The Midwife returns to BBC One on Sunday from 8pm.
