'Meaningful and substantial roles': Yami Gautam's vision for upcoming films

Actor Yami Gautam-Dhar is deliberately shunning "damsel in distress" roles to expand her filmography.

In a recent interview with PTI, she looked back at her career choices and what she hopes for the future.

"That was my past life. I can't recall anything," she said when asked about roles where she played the second fiddle to the lead actor.

She stressed it's been nearly half a decade since she's been working toward a filmography without it.

Gautam-Dhar, who debuted with Shoojit Sircar's Vicky Donor, has earlier been a part of the supporting cast of movies like Badlapur and Kaabil.

But she has since proven her mettle with powerful performances in films like Uri: The Surgical Strike, A Thursday, and Article 370.

Speaking about her unconventional debut in Vicky Donor, she said it happened because she had no fear as a beginner.

Reflecting on her career, she said, "You [should] have courage to stand your ground and tell yourself that, I respect myself and I respect those who gave me that opportunity.'

"(But) How do I prove to someone that this is what I'm capable of? The only way is that I'll have to take a very hard call that even if I don't have work, I'm going to be part of films where I'm getting to do something meaningful and substantial."

New release

Gautam-Dhar will next be seen in the Netflix romantic comedy Dhoom Dhaam, which releases on Valentine's Day.

In the film, she plays a fearless woman who likes to be in control of her life.

The film also stars Pratik Gandhi and is produced by her husband and director Aditya Dhar, Lokesh Dhar of B62 Studios, and Jyoti Deshpande of Jio Studios.
