The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced an extension for the activation of the Universal Account Number (UAN) and linking of bank accounts with Aadhaar until February 15, 2025. These steps are essential to claim benefits under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme.

Announcement Details

In a circular dated February 2, 2025, the Ministry of Labour and Employment stated:
“Referring to the referenced circulars, the competent authority has approved the extension for UAN activation and Aadhaar seeding in bank accounts till February 15, 2025.”

What is UAN?

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit identifier that simplifies the management of provident fund (PF) accounts. It provides employees with a centralized platform for tracking, accessing, and managing their PF funds conveniently.

  • Viewing and downloading PF passbooks
  • Submitting online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers

About the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme

The ELI Scheme aims to promote job creation in the formal sector through financial incentives for both employers and employees. Launched during the Union Budget 2024, the scheme is divided into three components:

  • Scheme A: Offers direct financial assistance (equal to one month’s salary) to new employees, paid in instalments.
  • Scheme B: Incentives for manufacturing sector employers who hire new workers.
  • Scheme C: Financial support for employers across sectors who generate additional jobs.
  • Benefits under the scheme are disbursed via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), provided the recipient’s bank account is Aadhaar-linked.

    How to Activate UAN via Aadhaar OTP

    As per the PIB release on November 21, 2024, employees can activate their UAN using an Aadhaar-based One-Time Password (OTP). Follow these simple steps:

  • Visit the EPFO Member Portal
  • Click on “Activate UAN” under the “Important Links” section
  • Enter Required Details: UAN, Aadhaar number, name, date of birth (DOB), and Aadhaar-linked mobile number
  • Ensure Mobile Number is Linked to Aadhaar for full access to EPFO’s digital services
  • Agree to Aadhaar OTP Verification
  • Click “Get Authorization PIN” to receive an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number
  • Enter the OTP to complete the activation process
  • Upon successful activation, a password will be sent to your registered mobile number, enabling you to access EPFO’s digital services and avail benefits under the ELI Scheme.
