Birth of Shivaji Maharaj

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born in the hill fort of Shivneri in Pune, Maharashtra. Shivaji Maharaj's childhood name was Shivaji Bhonsle. According to a legend, Jijabai prayed for a powerful son to Goddess Shiwai in Shivneri Fort, due to which the boy was named 'Shivaji'.

Shivaji's father Shahjiraje Bhonsle was a Maratha commander who was serving in the Deccan Sultanate. Also, his mother Jijabai was the daughter of Lakhuji Jadhavrao of Sindkhed. Shivaji Maharaj was the Maratha family and the king of the Bhosle dynasty.
