Motorists are being warned that a final warning letter landing on their doorstep could be the precursor to a hefty £1k fine.

If you've not yet paid your or applied for a SORN, you might find yourself receiving a V11. Despite its name bearing a striking resemblance to the V5C, the V11 is merely a reminder letter.

To either tax or SORN your vehicle, you'll need to fill out a V11 form. According to Motorway, the top section should display the car owner's details, including name, address, vehicle registration and the expiry date of their road tax.

The middle section is where you can inform the DVLA about your decision regarding your car tax - whether you want to pay it or register it as SORN. If you've sold the car, you can also notify the DVLA that you're no longer the owner.

The final section provides options to tax your car by phone, online, or at a post office. You should receive a V11 form any time after the 5th day of the month before your road tax renewal is due, explains Motorway.

You can pay your car's annual road tax up to two months before it's due, reports . If you have months left on your vehicle tax, you'll receive a road tax refund. It's crucial to keep track of your dates and know when your tax renewal is due to avoid fines.

Ideally, you should have sorted your road tax before the V11 reminder lands on your doormat. The V11 is essentially a final nudge to get your car taxed - not getting it doesn't let you off the hook. If you're caught driving without tax, you could be slapped with a fine of up to £2.5k.
