Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway: From Bhiwandi, commuters may now reach the Mumbai-Nagpur, also called the Samruddhi Expressway. By the end of this month, the 76-kilometer section between Igatpuri and Amane should be finished.

According to reports citing officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to open this section of the Mumbai-Nagpur expressway in March. Currently under progress, the last lane-marking and painting project is expected to be finished between February 25 and 27. Only when all significant construction is completed—a sign that the roadway is almost ready for public use—are these operations conducted.

At the now, the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway only runs 625 kilometers from Igatpuri, close to Nashik, to Nagpur. Delays in government formation and portfolio allocation caused the 76-kilometer Igatpuri-Amane segment to be delayed from its original November–December 2024 opening date. Rather, the MSRDC made the decision to finish all outstanding tasks and start the whole stretch at once.

Phase-wise Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Opening
Since December 2022, the 701-kilometer motorway—officially known as the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg—has been gradually inaugurated. The first 520-kilometer section between Nagpur and Shirdi was officially opened by PM Modi.

The 105-kilometer stretch from Shirdi to Bharvir was opened in May 2023 by then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Without a formal ceremony, a further 25 km between Bharvir and Igatpuri was made accessible to drivers in March 2024.

It joins the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, which is currently being built and runs from Jawaharlal Nehru Port to Gujarat, near Amane, the terminus of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway. A temporary arrangement has been constructed to make it easier to transit between the Samruddhi Expressway and the Mumbai-Nashik Highway.

The access-controlled greenfield highway was first announced in November 2015, and construction got underway in February 2019. 16 construction packages made up the project, and toll collection was permitted for 40 years.

Details about the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway
Along the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, MSRDC is creating 10 public utility zones, including rest spaces, restaurants, and gas stations, to improve commuter convenience. The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, which was constructed to accommodate speeds of up to 150 kmph, has contemporary features including flyovers, pedestrian crossings, and wildlife underpasses that combine traveler safety with efficiency.

The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is anticipated to significantly enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Nagpur with the impending expansion to Bhiwandi, cutting down on travel time and relieving traffic on the current routes. The last details are being finished, and commuters will have a smoother and quicker route from Mumbai itself once the stretch is opened.
