Obnews Tech Desk: ZOHO founder Sridhar Wambu has once again started a new debate about the language. He has advised the people of Tamil Nadu to learn Hindi so that they can provide better service to customers in North Indian markets – Mumbai, Delhi and Gujarat.

Vambu posted on X (East Twitter), saying that flexibility in languages can be commercially beneficial. He also said that the possibilities of jobs in rural areas are affected by the efficiency of speaking Hindi.

He clearly stated, “Not knowing Hindi in Tamil Nadu proves to be a big drawback.” He also revealed that he has started learning Hindi himself and so far about 20% Hindi has started understanding in 5 years.

Appeal to learn Hindi, but got mixed support

ZOHO Chief Scientist Weambu urged the Tamils to learn Hindi, keeping political differences beyond. He described it as a smart business strategy in India's fast growing economy.

At the end of his post, he gave a message in both Tamil and Hindi – “Let's learn Hindi!” However, mixed reactions have come to light on his statement.

  • Some people justified it, saying that Hindi should be the common language of India and Hindi should be given priority in business. He raised the question that when people can learn English, why avoid Hindi?
  • At the same time, some people opposed this idea and asked- “Why can't Hindi speaking people learn English?”
  • A user argued, “Sir, they can learn English. But, why pressure on us to learn Hindi? ”
  • Some other people talked about adopting a balanced approach and wrote, “People should learn languages for progress. Those who want a good job in technology should also learn Tamil or Kannada, because most of the IT jobs are in Bengaluru and Chennai. ”

Have raised the issue of language before

This is not the first time Sridhar Vambu is engulfed in linguistic controversies.

  • In November 2024, he advised people living in Bengaluru to learn Kannada.
  • He had said that “If you live in a state for years, it is derogatory not to learn the language there.”
  • Even at that time, his statement was divided on social media – some supported him and some disagreed it.

Language dispute: personal choice or business compulsion?

This comment by Sridhar Vambu gives rise to a big debate of which language in India should be the medium of trade and contact.

  • Will it be right to make Hindi a Common Business Language of India?
  • Or should every person have the freedom to choose the language according to their need and interest?

This debate continues, but it is certain that the issue of language in a multilingual country like India will always be sensitive.
