Speaking at a press conference, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that the state government issued a fresh notification making Punjabi the main subject for Class 10. He stated, ‘If Punjabi is taught without being the main subject, the certificate will be considered null and void. It will be implemented on all boards.’
Punjab govt questions over removal of Punjabi from CBSE exams
Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has accused the Union government and the CBSE of removing Punjabi from the CBSE Class 10 board exams list of subjects. The statement came a day after the board approved draft guidelines to conduct Class 10 board exams twice a year from 2026.
According to the draft norms published on CBSE’s website, regional languages such as Rai, Gurung, Tamang, Sherpa, Sanskrit, Urdu, Marathi, Gujarati, Manipuri, Tibetan, Bhoti, Telugu, Bodo, Tangkhul, Bhutia, Kashmiri, Mizo, and Thai have been included. However, Punjabi has been removed.
Calling it a ‘well-planned conspiracy against Punjab, Punjabi, and Punjabiyat,’ the education minister of the state criticised the board for neglecting Punjabi in its new exam policy. He pointed out that under the draft guidelines, subjects like Science, Math, Social Science, Hindi, and English are categorised as main subjects, while regional and foreign languages are in a separate group.
Bains further alleged that while CBSE has included foreign languages like Thai, German, and French, it has completely ignored Punjabi.
