Trigger Happy TV star Dom Joly quipped his wife Stacey MacDougall's key fear before he went into the jungle for in 2010 was that he would "be himself".
Speaking exclusively to in advance of the 25th anniversary tour of the show that made him famous he said: "I said to my wife, don't worry, I'll just be myself. And she said, 'Please anything but that!'" he laughed.
On a more serious note he confessed she was genuinely afraid he might do something "terrible" which would lead to their two children being bullied in school.
"I think the first time (my children) were both aware that I did something weird (for a living) was when I went on I'm a Celeb, because suddenly they were in the hotel with Shaun Ryder's kids and having that experience.
"But then my wife was terrified that I'd do something terrible on the show and they will get bullied at school. But actually, I think they enjoyed that bit."
Although Stacey had expressed concern Dom he says wasn't worried that he would be shown in a bad light as he didn't give producers any reason to edit him negatively.
"I wasn't worried about how I would come across really, because I don't have a temper. I'm not a racist. I wasn't going to suddenly out myself as a homophobe because I'm not one.
"And actually, I think I'm more comfortable on those shows than most people. For instance I was on with Jenny Eclair, who I love, I absolutely adore her. But Jenny is used to being a stand up and having a structured routine. She's not that comfortable ad libbing, whereas my whole life is ad libbing.
"Actually, I find a reality show format suits me absolutely perfectly. And also I've done enough directing and producing my own shows to know that if you don't give them a storyline, they'll make one up for you. So I wasn't trying to give a storyline. I was very clear that I wasn't giving them something so they didn't need to bother with me. They'd have to work out with someone that was probably a little less problematic.
"But yeah, having said that, you never know what they're going to do (in the edit), but all I could be was myself," he said. His strategy seemed to have worked and he lasted quite well becoming the ninth celebrity eliminated.
Dom will be putting all his aforementioned ad libbing skills to good use when he takes Trigger Happy TV to the stage for the first time later this year to mark a quarter century since the show first broadcast.
"When Trigger Happy was first massive, we (Dom and co-creator Sam Cadman) were offered a huge tour, and we just said, I didn't do live stuff, and I didn't know how to do it. If I was the Fast Show, I would just take the sketches and recreate them. But Trigger Happy is all about me with members of the public so how do you recreate that? That was the issue. I've now got back together with Sam and we sat in a pub for an afternoon, and we cried with laughter, and we came up with how we're going to do it. So it's a sort of mishmash we're going to have.
"There's a real sense that I found when people watch Trigger Happy on their own at home - there's something very different when it's communal, especially when it's a bit nostalgic. So we're definitely going to show some of the clips, and people can enjoy them together, and I'm gonna obviously say how the clips came about and things that went wrong.
"But also what I'm really interested in is getting people to sort of feel they're in a Trigger Happy sketch, because really, Trigger Happy is all about me interacting with the public, so that's what I should do in a theatre. So several of the more famous Trigger Happy characters will appear on stage and then there'll be various ways they interact with the audience. And then, of course, it's Trigger Happy, and it's about pranking people so there's a lot of stuff that's going to happen to the audience and they need to expect the unexpected," he teased.
