Amid the rising number of cybercrimes in Mumbai and Maharashtra, the Maharashtra Cyber Cell, in collaboration with the NGO Brush of Hope, launched a new cybercrime helpline on Friday. The helpline aims to assist victims of cyber threats, bullying, and sextortion.
The inauguration event was held at the Maharashtra Cyber Cell office and was attended by BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Maharashtra Cyber Cell Chief Yashasvi Yadav, Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar, and actress Jacqueline Fernandez.
According to the Cyber Cell, the helpline number 022-65366666 will be operational six days a week, from 9 AM to 8 PM. Dr. Sheetal Gagrani, the founder of Brush of Hope, stated that dedicated teams will be available to support victims of sextortion and cyberbullying. Victims can communicate in English, Hindi, and Marathi. The helpline teams will provide guidance and emotional support, and if necessary, victims will be encouraged to approach the police for further action. The primary goal of this helpline is to ensure that victims do not feel alone and that help is readily available.
Rising Cyber Threats & Need for HelplineIG Yashasvi Yadav emphasized that cybercrime is now the world's number one organized crime. Many victims hesitate to approach the police, making the helpline a critical first point of contact for those seeking assistance.
Three-Tier Assistance SystemThe helpline will operate on a three-tier support system:
Counseling and Emotional Support – Provided by trained counselors specializing in cyber abuse cases.
Legal Guidance – Expert advice on legal measures and assistance in filing complaints.
Escalation Support – Immediate intervention in serious cases in collaboration with law enforcement.
With cyber threats on the rise, the Maharashtra Cyber Cell aims to empower victims and create a safer digital environment through this initiative.
