Money guru Martin Lewis has revealed one mistake Brits make when booking a holiday, and it could cost us thousands. Many of us have already locked in our , or perhaps you've decided to push the boat out and finally splash out on a fortnight in the tropical Maldives.

While booking in advance can be a great way to lock in those cheap deals before prices start to skyrocket, it also increases the risk of something going wrong. Sudden ill health, a loss of job, or even a change in relationship can all jeopardise the future of those future holidays - which could leave you out of pocket. On his eponymously named show, Martin warned: "Travel insurance is not just to cover you while you're away. It's also very important to cover you in case something happens before you go that stops you go."

"If you don't have your travel insurance and your holiday is booked - do it right now. The money-saving guru explained how every year he receives questions from people who have booked a holiday and then been unable to actually go for a whole host of reasons, including one person who was diagnosed with cancer.
