Women across the world, and in different cultures, play many important roles-- be it that of a dotting daughter, sister, loving wife, or a nurturing mother, and in many cases they do all this along with their duties at work. And so, to honour the women in our lives, each year International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8, as designated by the United Nations . This is a special day for women, to thank them for making our worlds better each day with their love and care. It is a day to cherish the important women in our lives, and celebrate womanhood.
International Women's Day (IWD) initially started in the early 20th century amid movements for women's rights . The first National Women's Day was marked in the United States on February 28, 1909, and it was organised by the Socialist Party of America. Inspired by this, German activist Clara Zetkin proposed a yearly international celebration of Women's Day at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference. The first official International Women’s Day was marked on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Later, March 8 became the global date for celebrating the International Women's Day as recognised by the United Nations in 1977. International Women's Day now symbolises gender equality , celebrating women 's achievements and advocating for their rights. Each year, the International Women's Day has a specific theme and for 2025 it is: "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment". This emphasises the urgency to progress toward gender parity across the world.
