Time brings both challenges and opportunities, and Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma is a prime example of this. After India's defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia, he faced heavy criticism and calls for his removal from captaincy. However, with India's qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, the narrative around him has changed significantly. Now, reports suggest he may continue leading the team into the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

Rohit Sharma’s Fortune Takes a Positive Turn

During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India struggled, suffering a 3-1 series defeat to Australia. This led to intense discussions among the team’s management, including the head coach, chief selector, and BCCI officials. Speculation was rife that Rohit might step down as captain. However, following India's successful qualification for the Champions Trophy final, his position as a leader appears more secure.

Potential Captaincy for the 2027 ODI World Cup

According to reports, if India secures victory in the Champions Trophy 2025, the BCCI may extend Rohit Sharma’s captaincy for two more years to maintain leadership stability. If this happens, he could be seen leading Team India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. The tournament is set to be hosted jointly by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Journey

Rohit took over as India's captain in all three formats after Virat Kohli stepped down in 2021. Under his leadership, India reached the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup, the final of the 2023 World Test Championship, and the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite coming close to victory in these tournaments, the team fell short of securing a win. However, in 2024, under his captaincy, India remained unbeaten and lifted the T20 World Cup trophy.

If India's performance remains strong, particularly in upcoming major tournaments, Rohit Sharma could very well continue leading the team, including in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
