After the end of the Champions Trophy 2025, the eyes will be directly on the new season of the Indian Premier League. Once again, its fans will have high expectations from the current champion Kolkata Knight Riders. But this time the team will land without Gautam Gambhir, whose franchise won this title while being a mentor. To overcome their deficiency, the co-owner of the franchise Shah Rukh Khan is bringing new people to the team and in this episode, now a coach has been added, which has experience of winning the T20 World Cup. Just before the new season, KKR has made Otis Gibson a new assistant coach.
Kolkata announced this new appointment about 2 weeks before the IPL 2025 season starting on 22 March. The franchise said in a press release that Gibson, who was the West Indies and former South African head coach, will currently play the role of the team's assistant coach for just 2025 seasons. Till last year, Gibson was also the head coach of the Bangladesh cricket team. Former West Indies fast bowler Gibson will join the support staff of Chandrakant Pandit, Dwayne Bravo, Bharat Arun and Carl Crowe in this franchise.
Former fast bowler Otis Gibson from Barbados played Tests and ODI cricket for the West Indies from 1995 to 1999. He played a total of 17 matches for the Caribbean team. Gibson's international career was small but he played more than 650 first class matches in his career. After retiring, he started his journey in coaching. Apart from the head coaches of many teams, he has also been a bowling coach. But the biggest achievement of his career came in 2012 when the West Indies under his leadership won the T20 World Cup title.
This is the second big announcement from Kolkata before the IPL 2025 season starts. Earlier, the franchise also announced its new captain recently. After the departure of captain Shreyas Iyer, who made the team champion in the last season, Kolkata has given this responsibility to veteran Indian batsman and Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane this time. Kolkata bought Rahane for 1.50 crores in mega auction. At the same time, Venkatesh Iyer, who was purchased for Rs 23.75 crore, has been made the vice-captain.
