Halifax bank is giving customers a £2,000 cashback reward for making one green upgrade to their home.

is available to customers applying for a new , additional borrowing or switching to a new deal after July 31, 2024, who opt to get a installed in their property. Eligible customers need to make a Green Living Reward claim and will have one year to get the work done, after which will issue the £2,000 cashback.

Heat pumps are currently more expensive to buy and install than a conventional boiler, but they are significantly more energy efficient and can be cheaper to run, potentially saving you hundreds of pounds per year if you switch.

They work by capturing heat from the air, ground or water and then passing this through a heat exchanger, where energy is then transferred to the water that flows through your radiators or underfloor heating, and to the water stored in hot water cylinders.

According to Octopus Energy, the average lifespan of a heat pump is up to 20 years, compared to 15 for a boiler, and they have an efficiency of 310%, compared to just 85% for a boiler.

The supplier says for the average UK home the cost of running a heat pump should cost a similar amount to a gas boiler, but it's possible to save hundreds of pounds per year if you choose a smart, green heat pump tariff, so the investment is worth it.

To qualify for the £2,000 cashback for heat pump from Halifax, customers need to:

• apply for a new Halifax mortgage, additional borrowing, or be switching to a new deal, after 31 July 2024
• hold a Halifax current account
• complete an eligible home improvement within one year after completing your Halifax mortgage, additional borrowing, or new deal

Halifax says: "Once you've completed your mortgage, additional borrowing, or new deal, you'll have one year to get the work done. You can use your own installer or one we've teamed-up with.

"Once the work's complete, you can upload your invoice to your Green Living journey and submit your claim. You can track your claim's progress once it's been submitted.

"After receiving the cashback Reward, you'll have three months to schedule the free Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) assessment."

In addition to the £2,000 cashback, if you're a Halifax borrowing, mortgage, savings, investment or insurance customer and you get a heat pump installed with Octopus Energy then you'll also be eligible for £100 energy credit.
