Now before buying a car, it will be necessary to prove that you have a parking space available. The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Authority (Cumta) has implemented a new parking policy, which aims to reduce traffic problem and promote public transport.

What is a new Chennai car policy?

For the first time in the country, it has happened that to solve the problem of traffic jam, a policy of mandatory parking has been introduced before purchasing a vehicle. This policy has been approved by the Housing and Urban Development Department. The Tamil Nadu government announced the implementation of this policy in the Madras High Court in 2024.

What to do before buying a car?

Under the new policy, now any person in Chennai will have to provide proof of his parking system before purchasing a car. This parking space can be indoors or in a private property.

Regarding this policy, Cumta Secretary I Jayakumar said – “People often buy many vehicles, but they have limited parking space. This causes those vehicles to be erected on the streets, which causes traffic and people in the vicinity. ”

How will the new parking system be?

The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Authority has also planned to introduce an off-world parking policy and implement residential parking permit system.

Under this system:

  • The space for parking on wide roads will be allotted through lottery system.
  • Homes that already have parking space will not be included in this list.
  • This place will be rented, which people will be able to take on a month or annual basis.
