Two students were left seriously injured after a funfair ride in malfunctioned mid-air, causing a huge metal rod to come loose and crush the thrillseekers.

The terrifying accident took place at MGM Amusement Park in Chennai last Thursday, March 13. Shocking footage captured the moment the boat swung several feet into the air when a large metal rod suddenly detached and landed on the two riders. A panicked woman was heard screaming at the operators to stop the ride immediately before one of the students was rushed to with severe head injuries.

The college students were on a trip to the park when disaster struck. The second victim student was also injured but was later described as being in stable condition. After the accident, Kanathur registered a case against the amusement park, while three staff members linked to the ride’s operation were arrested.

Authorities have since shut down the attraction and carried out safety inspections on all the other rides.

It comes after a 13-year-old girl was left dangling 60 feet in the air after in December last year.

Dramatic footage captured the moment the youngster desperately held onto a metal rod just below the opened capsule in a desperate attempt to save her life. A man in the next gondola was seen trying to reach toward the teen to help, while a fairground employee began scaling a ladder to try and reach her.

Horrified onlookers were heard screaming in shock as the ride's operator quickly span the wheel to bring the youngster back to ground level. The dramatic scenes unfolded at a fair in the girl's home village of Rakehti in Uttar Pradesh State, India, close to the border with Nepal.

The girl reportedly fell from her pod after the ride experienced a sudden jolt. She continued to hold one of the bars tightly while dangling from the rotating structure. Once the ride reached its lowest point, a worker was able to walk over to the girl and help her off.

Gasps from members of the crowd turned to excited chatter as the teenager was finally carried to safety.
