With summer temperatures soaring, snakes become more active, seeking cool, damp, and shaded areas to escape the heat. They are often found near certain plants. Some plants can actually attract snakes, so it is best to be aware of these and remove them from your surroundings.

Snake expert Mahadev Patel, from Mandaleshwar in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh, explains that snakes are drawn to places offering comfort, shade, and protection. Certain plants not only provide hiding spots but can also increase the likelihood of snakes being present.

Here are five plants he recommends avoiding around your house:

Lantana Plant

Although attractive with its vibrant flowers, the Lantana plant is a favourite of snakes. Its dense foliage and small fruits offer both shelter and a food source for snakes. Experts advise removing this plant from your home’s vicinity.

Basil Plant

Revered for its religious and medicinal significance, the Basil plant’s aroma and leaf structure can attract snakes. It is best to keep this plant indoors and avoid planting it outside.

Champa Plant

Known for its fragrant blooms, the Champa plant’s branches and leaves create an ideal hiding spot for snakes. Avoid planting it near the main entrance of your house or garden.

Lemon Plant

Snakes are also attracted to lemon plants, finding easy cover among its fruits and leaves. Regular pruning is recommended if you have lemon plants in your garden.

Aparajita plant

Despite its beautiful blue flowers, the Aparajita plant is another favourite of snakes. Its vines and thick leaves offer an ideal hiding place. It is best to avoid planting this near your house.

Maintaining a clean garden is crucial during summer. Mahadev Patel emphasises that snakes seek cool, shaded places in the summer months. If you have any of the mentioned plants around your house, it is best to remove them immediately.

You should also clear any accumulated dry leaves and dense bushes in your garden as these provide prime hiding spots for snakes.
