Categories of jobs in Indian Railways

There are different categories for working in railways: A, B, C, and D. All the posts in railways are divided into these categories. Let's know about these categories:

Group A Category: Group A category posts are placed in the officer category. Most of the recruitments in this are done through Civil Service. Recruitment for other posts in this category is done through the Engineering Service Exam and Combined Medical Exam.

Group A posts to be filled through Combined Engineering Service Exam:
Indian Railway Service of Engineers
Indian Railway Stores Service
Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers
Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers
Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers
Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers is also recruited through UPSC Special Class Railway Apprentice Exam.

Group B Category: Group B officers are recruited through promotion from Group C. Group B posts in railways are also of officer category. Some posts are filled through UPSC and the rest are filled through promotion. Group A and Group B posts in Indian Railways are gazetted.

Group C Category: Group C recruitment is done by Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), which work under Railway Recruitment Control Board (RRCB). These Railway Recruitment Boards are the main recruitment agencies for zonal railways and production units. In this, applications are made for various Group C posts through both technical and non-technical examinations.

Group C Technical Services include:

Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering

Signal and Communication Department etc.

Non-Technical Services include:

Clerks, Assistant Station Masters, Ticket Collectors etc.

The selected candidates are recommended to the Zonal Railways and temporary appointment is done from the headquarters of the Zonal Railways.

Group C includes these posts: Assistant Station Master, Guard, Clerk, Ticket Collector, Traffic Apprentice, Stenographer etc. These posts are also called subordinate posts.

Group D Category: Group D recruitment is done at the departmental level. It can also be done by the headquarters of the zonal railway.

Posts under Group D: Gateman, Helper, Khalasi, Trolleyman, Trackman, Hospital Attendant, Pointman, Assistant Pointman, Porter. Group C and Group D posts in Indian Railways are non-gazetted.

Salary and Post Information in Indian Railways

Employees in Indian Railways are divided into four groups, whose salary and post are different:

Group A includes higher posts like Manager and General Manager, whose salary ranges from Rs 8700 to Rs 10,000.

Group B includes employees like Chief Guard Master, Station Supervisor, whose salary ranges from Rs 4800 to Rs 7600.

Group C includes employees like Junior Engineer, Loco Pilot, Train Ticket Examiner, Reservation Assistant and Ticketing Clerk, whose salary ranges from Rs 2000 to Rs 4600.

Group D includes trackmen, helpers and other support staff, whose salary ranges from Rs 1800 to Rs 1900.
