Today is a bank holiday: On Tuesday, April 1, 2025, banks will celebrate a holiday in anticipation of the start of the next fiscal year 2025–2026. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has required this closure as part of the yearly practice of shutting accounts from the 2024–2025 fiscal year. These closures are included in the RBI’s holiday calendar, which is published at the beginning of the year to give banks time to complete their financial records.
The “closing of accounts,” a critical procedure where banks reconcile annual transactions, update records, and get ready for the next fiscal year, is especially scheduled for the April 1 holiday. In India’s largest cities, this technique is especially crucial for scheduled and non-scheduled banks. However, because of regional differences in the holiday calendar, banks in Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, West Bengal, and Himachal Pradesh will stay open on this day.
Today, SBI and HDFC Banks were closed.
Although officially banks will be open on April 1, clients won’t be able to use financial services. This implies that no public transactions would be carried out by branches of large banks such as SBI and HDFC. The branches will only concentrate on internal year-end closure procedures.
Customers will not be able to visit the bank on April 1st for any services due to this shutdown. Urgent transactions will still be possible using digital banking solutions, including internet platforms, ATMs, and mobile applications. Given the growing popularity of digital banking, the RBI wants to make sure that these holidays don’t totally interrupt financial services.
According to the RBI, there will be other bank holidays in April 2025 in addition to April 1, such as regional festivals and the customary second and fourth Saturdays. In April 2025, banks will be closed for a total of 15 days, including Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
