Justin Rose won't have to rearrange his trophy cabinet if he finally lands his first title this week. Rose, 44, rolled back the years in his opening round on Thursday as he carded a sublime 65, leaving him three shots clear of the chasing pack.

Despite his distinguished career Rose only has one major title to his name, the 2013 US Open. That success signifies one of 25 professional wins, while he also took gold at the 2016 in Rio. However, the ultimate prize at Augusta has thus far alluded to him, finishing runner-up in 2015 and 2017.

The Ryder Cup hero has already created the perfect set-up at home to motivate his dream, though. After his last win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2023, Rose made a striking admission to his fans.

Via a YouTube video, he showed off his vast trophy room to viewers. However, rather than sit his newly won silverware on a vacant shelf, the Englishman explained why he would instead rejig things.

"Hey guys, I'm back home and brought a little friend with me," he said. "Before I left on this trip, I talked about this big empty space here being a big motivator for me."

Making his future ambitions clear, he added: "The year is too young to fill it, so I'm going to do a bit of rearranging and see if we can fill it later in the year."

Rose hasn't since been able to secure another trophy, and a glance at the room would have been an ample reminder of that before leaving for Augusta. As well as being handed the fabled green jacket, the Masters winner is also presented with a trophy, first constructed back in 1961 when Gary Player became the maiden recipient.

The desire Rose remained apparent during the early stages of his second round on Friday. He picked up a shot over the first 10 holes to move to eight under par and remain in the overall lead.
