Matthew Fox, founder of media company Sweat Elite and popular YouTuber in the running community, was arrested in Osaka on Friday for violating Japan’s narcotics law.
Fox is accused of attempting to smuggle THC (an active ingredient in cannabis) pills into Japan from the U.S. via an international courier service in February.
The 38-year-old runner denies the charges, but if convicted of drug importation, Fox could face years in prison and potential deportation. If convicted, he could be permanently banned from entering Japan.
Fox, also a podcast host and founder of running media company Sweat Elite, traveled to Japan in February to participate in the 2025 Osaka Marathon. The race was part of his challenge to finish a marathon under 2.5 hours every month, but he did not finish and quỉt after 22km.

After dropping out, Fox shared on social media that he “failed to manage the stressors of life brought on by his own decisions.”
In a recent podcast episode, Fox explained that he often carries THC gummies to help with anxiety and sleep, noting that many countries do not ban THC products for personal use.
“I travel with THC gummies, and most countries don’t care, but Japan is different—they tend to search you every time,” he said.
Fox is aware of Japan’s strict drug laws, so he avoided bringing gummies into the country.
After the 2025 Osaka Marathon, he spent a few days skiing in the mountains before going offline on social media.
This is not the first time Fox has run into legal trouble in Japan. In 2023, he was banned for life from the Ageo City Half Marathon after running with someone else’s bib, a violation deemed as cheating.
Fox’s personal best is 2 hours and 18.41 minutes, achieved at the 2024 Indianapolis Marathon.
