In the haunt to find which ketchup is the best, you’d be surprised to know that supermarket-branded products can beat the fancy brands. In this case, it did happen and it's not .

is a popular and widely used condiment in the UK and is even considered a staple in many households. It’s used on various foods, from the iconic fish and chips to breakfast dishes, and its versatility allows it to be the go-to condiment to any meal.

In a blind-taste survey conducted by, a total of 76 tasters tried a range of supermarket own-label ketchups and branded ones, scoring them based on their aroma, appearance, texture and most importantly, the flavour.

Among six different , including , , and Sainsbury’s, the results revealed that shoppers don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy the taste of a product.

The best supermarket tomato ketchup was named Lidl’s Batts Tomato Ketchup, with a total score of 75%. Tasters described it as having the right strength of flavour, tanginess and sweetness. Costing £1.05 per 650g, it costs less than a quarter of the price per 100g, compared to Heinz.)

Lidl’s ketchup also contains less sugar and salt than the average product whilst still maintaining its vibrant red colour and consistency.

According to the study: "The majority thought it had the right strength of flavour, tanginess and sweetness, and a whopping 92% said the colour looked appetising. 78% felt the consistency was spot-on, too. Lidl’s ketchup has less sugar and salt than average."

In second and third place, it was and , respectively. Which? said: "More than 60% thought it had the right thickness and a good strength of flavour, though a third found it too tangy for their liking." At £1.10, it is the priciest of the supermarket's brands but still cheaper than the bigger brands.

Describing Aldi’s Bramwsells Tomato Ketchup, the consusite said: "A good-looking ketchup. Most of our testers enjoyed its flavour and said it had a pleasing thickness. However, around a third found it too sweet, a little too tangy and runnier than they’d like."

Despite Lidl taking the crown as the best UK supermarket ketchup, consumers still love Heinz's ketchup. People loved its colour, many claiming that its favour just “hit the spot.”

The review concluded: "Overall, our test shows you can't really go wrong with Heinz if you're looking for a top-tier taste."
