made a jibe at Emily Thornberry in a post marking St George's Day. The Tory former prime minister referred to the Labour MP infamously tweeting a picture of a house decked with England flags during the 2014 Rochester and Strood by-election.

The post prompted accusations of snobbery and led to her resignation from Labour's frontbencher. Mr Johnson wrote on X: "Happy St George's Day! Let's fly the England flag in defiance of Emily Thornberry and joyless wokery everywhere."

Ms Thornberry posted the photo while out campaigning in the Rochester and Strood by-election.

It showed the semi-detached property which had a white van parked outside and was displaying three England flags.

Alongside the picture, she wrote: "Image from Rochester."

She later posted a further message apologising if she had caused offence.

But she was forced to step down from her shadow attorney general role amid fury from then-leader Ed Miliband.

At the time, Nigel Farage, who was the leader of Ukip, said she had "let Miliband's mask slip".

He also questioned what the Islington South and Finsbury MP was trying to imply by tweeting the picture.
