While the Chasers get to meet every contestant on the and host quizzes the players about their personal lives, one thing will always remain unknown to the cast members - why producers picked the players to appear on the show.
, who has been both a contestant and a Chaser, is still none the wiser about what the ITV show bosses are looking for as he admitted that he and his co-stars are "told nothing" as he has "no clue". Speaking exclusively to at one of his quiz nights, in , the 44-year-old Irishman shared: "For a huge number of reasons, we are told nothing about what they're looking for.
"We are not, in any way, allowed to know anything about who the contestants are, how they're selected, what order they are put in. There is like an iron curtain between us. Because, obviously, that leaves it open to abuse and it is very, very serious, so I have no idea what they want."
He added: "But anyone can see that they want a range of different ages, different genders, different backgrounds, different places and that's what they look for in a team. But on an individual basis, that's a question for the producers. I think they just spot something, whether its the job that you do. They've told us nothing. Honestly, not a clue."
In 2017, Darragh appeared on the show as a contestant, where he earned an impressive £9,000 in his Cash Builder round and defeated chaser Paul Sinha in the head-to-head. The other three contestants also advanced, but each of them took low offers from Sinha so that the final prize total was only £6,300 - giving each contestant £1,575 when the team eventually won.
In April 2020, Ennis was announced as the sixth chaser on The Chase, alongside Mark Labbett, Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha and Jenny Ryan, with his debut airing on November 19, 2020. His very first episode as a Chaser brought in an impressive 4.9 million viewers, making it the most watched episode of The Chase ever.
Darragh recently invited live audiences across the nation to take part in his Ultimate Pub Quiz tour. He put on six shows, with visits to Barnard Castle, Sheffield, Bedford, Liverpool, Southport and Manchester, with tickets costing £20 which also included a meet and greet with the star himself.
The nights, which were full of banter, were led by Darragh who hosted multiple rounds of questions spanning general knowledge, pop culture, history, and more. The quizzing legend will be back on tour with more dates around the UK, which are yet to be confirmed, later this year.
