A PAN (Permanent Account Number) card is one of the most essential documents for taxpayers in India. It’s not just required for filing income tax returns, but also for opening bank accounts, conducting high-value financial transactions, purchasing or selling property, and more.
But what happens if your PAN card is lost, stolen, or damaged? Don’t worry — the Income Tax Department has made the process to reissue a PAN card easy and fully online. Best of all, it only costs ₹50 to get a duplicate PAN card reprinted and delivered.
Here’s everything you need to know.
If your original PAN card is lost or stolen, take this important precaution:
File an FIR (First Information Report) at your nearest police station.
This helps prevent identity theft or fraudulent use of your PAN card.
If you don’t remember your PAN number, follow these steps:
Go to the Income Tax Department’s website and use the “Know Your PAN” feature.
Enter your name, date of birth, and father’s name.
Your PAN number will be shown on the screen after verification.
The reprint of PAN card is issued by NSDL (now Protean eGov Technologies Ltd) and UTIITSL, but here we explain the process via NSDL portal, which is fast and user-friendly.

The reprinted card is not a new PAN, it’s a reprint of the existing one.
You should not apply for a new PAN if your card is just lost or damaged.
If your mobile number is not registered or has changed, you’ll need to update it through the Aadhaar update process before OTP verification.
Losing your PAN card can be stressful, but getting a duplicate PAN card is quick, easy, and inexpensive. With just ₹50 and a few minutes online, you can have your PAN reissued and delivered to your doorstep — no paperwork or office visits required.
