Deepfake Video Scam: While Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has revolutionized many fields, its misuse is also increasing rapidly. In a recent case from Argentina, a woman was deeply misled with the help of AI and duped of about Rs 11 lakh.

In this fraud, cyber criminals created a deepfake video by copying the face and voice of Hollywood actor George Clooney. In this fake video, "Clooney" is seen talking to the woman. His gestures, smile, and actions like blinking were so real that the woman did not find any reason to doubt.

Everything started with a fake Facebook account, which claimed to be the official page of George Clooney. The woman found this profile to be real, and the conversation started. In the coming six weeks, she received several video calls and messages, which were prepared with AI technology. The woman was completely convinced that she was connected to the real actor.

Gradually, that fake 'Clooney' started building an emotional relationship. The woman was assured that the actor wanted to separate from his wife and needed emotional support. It was also told that his fan club card had failed, and he needed money urgently.

The woman was also promised that she would be given a good job in return for taking her into confidence. Taking advantage of this trust and emotional attachment, cyber thugs extorted an amount of 10,000 pounds, i.e., about 11.3 lakh rupees, from the woman.

The videos and messages prepared by AI were so real that the woman did not even once suspect that she was being cheated. Earlier, a similar incident took place in France in the month of January, where a fake AI avatar of Brad Pitt was used to defraud Rs 7.9 crore.

Taking lessons from these cases, it is important to be very cautious while interacting with any unknown or celebrity profile on social media. Believing any video or message to be true without checking it can cause huge losses. Before making financial transactions or sharing personal information, consult security agencies and immediately report any suspicious activities to the cyber cell.
