Senior Singaporean Minister Lee Hsien Loong sent a condolence message to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the death of former Vietnam President Tran Duc Luong on May 20, while Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam wrote to Vietnam’s President Luong Cuong.
“I would like to offer my deepest condolences on behalf of the people of Singapore on the passing of former President Tran Duc Luong,” Tharman said in the letter. During a period of significant change for Vietnam, President Luong served his people with unwavering resolve. Following Doi Moi, President Luong guided Vietnam through the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and its official entrance to ASEAN in 1995, facilitating its incorporation into its institutions. He made enormous contributions that will never be forgotten. We send our deepest condolences to you, the Vietnamese people, and President Luong’s family.
“I regret to inform you of the passing of former President Tran Duc Luong,” said Lee Hsien in his letter. As Singapore’s prime minister at the time, I had the privilege of meeting President Luong on my first trip to Vietnam in December 2004. As a statesman, President Luong dedicated his life to helping his nation. Under his direction, Vietnam strengthened its ties with Singapore and the rest of the region while making steady progress toward reform. He was instrumental in establishing the long-lasting friendship and trust between our two nations. His legacy will go on.
