Thane commuters recently celebrated their first metro link via Mumbai Metro Line-3. Building on that progress, Metro Line 14—spanning 38 km from Kanjurmarg to Badlapur—is now under active planning. Though construction may begin in about a year, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is already fast-tracking its preparations.
Kanjurmarg to badlapur in under an hour
Currently, travel between Mumbai and Badlapur can take up to two hours. Metro Line 14 is expected to slash this to under an hour by offering an alternative to traffic-prone roads. Once operational, it will significantly ease daily commutes for thousands in East Mumbai and nearby suburbs.
Two-Part Metro Design: Underground and Elevated
The proposed Metro Line 14 will be built in two sections:
This hybrid design balances urban infrastructure constraints while maximizing route efficiency.
Environmental Clearance: A Key Hurdle
One of the major challenges lies in securing clearance for construction near sensitive ecological areas, including the Parsik Hills and Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. Authorities must ensure that construction won’t damage local flora, fauna, or natural habitats, with strict conditions to be met for approval.
Project Cost and Next Steps
The total project cost is estimated at ₹18,000 crore. A Detailed Project Report (DPR), prepared by consultancy firm Milan Metro and vetted by IIT Bombay, is now ready. Once submitted and approved by the state government, the bidding process for construction will begin.
Part of a Bigger Metro Vision
Metro Line 14 is a crucial part of Mumbai’s broader 337-km metro network expansiondesigned to improve intra-city connectivity and reduce reliance on congested roadways. Once completed, it will be a major infrastructure boost for commuters living along the eastern corridor of the city.
