Inzaghi's New Chapter with Al Hilal
Riyadh: On Thursday, it was announced that former Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has been appointed as the new head coach of Al Hilal, just days before the team competes in the revamped Club World Cup.
The Italian manager, who recently faced a significant loss in the Champions League final, had previously downplayed speculation regarding a lucrative two-year contract worth 50 million euros.
"I am Simone Inzaghi, and today marks the beginning of my journey with Al Hilal," he stated in a professionally produced video shared on X, where he enjoys Arabian coffee and affixes an Al Hilal badge to his suit.
At 49 years old, Inzaghi joins a growing list of prominent football figures moving to Saudi Arabia, a nation preparing to host the World Cup in 2034.
Al Hilal welcomed him with the message, "The Italian genius is here. Welcome, Simone Inzaghi."
Inzaghi's arrival adds to the roster that includes players like Ruben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrovic, while the club parted ways with injury-prone Neymar after just seven appearances since his signing in August 2023.
A source familiar with the negotiations indicated that Cristiano Ronaldo, who has expressed intentions to leave rival club Al Nassr, may be considering a transfer to Al Hilal.
This week, Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes revealed that he turned down a reported $135 million offer from Al Hilal, stating his desire to "continue playing at the highest level."
Inzaghi's Inter Milan suffered a 5-0 defeat against Qatar-backed Paris Saint-Germain in the recent Champions League final, leading to his departure being confirmed on Tuesday.
During his tenure at Inter, which began in 2021, Inzaghi secured one Serie A title and two Italian Cups. He led the team to two Champions League finals within three seasons, although they lost both.
Despite being on track to replicate the treble success of 2010 just weeks ago, Inter concluded the season without any trophies after faltering in various competitions.
The expanded Club World Cup, featuring teams like Inter, PSG, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, is set to commence on June 15.
Given his history of maximizing player potential, Al Hilal can anticipate a strong performance in the Club World Cup. Inzaghi's Inter exemplified resilience and determination, reaching the Champions League final against the odds with an aging squad.
Although Al Hilal will face some of the world's top clubs, they possess players who could thrive under Inzaghi's guidance.
