A large area of the UK is set to be struck by fierce that may cause power cuts for Brits in affected areas, the has warned.



The national agency has said heavy showers and thunderstorms may lead to some disruption to transport as well as infrastructure, with a possible 40mm of rain battering multiple areas and power cuts "likely". The yellow thunderstorm warning, covering the southeast, southwest, , the Midlands and east of England, is in place tomorrow from 9am until 6pm. Several major cities are due for a soaking, including , Reading, Brighton, Birmingham and .



Brits have been urged to watch out for lightning strikes that may leave buildings and structures damaged, and to consider preparing an emergency flood kit if your home is vulnerable to the expected deluges.

are also expected to face disruption on Saturday - with spray, standing water and possible hail bringing longer journey times by car and bus. The warning adds: "Some short term loss of power and other services is likely."



According to the Met Office, frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to batter Brits in the affected area for much of Saturday before fading from the west during the mid to late afternoon.



"10-15 mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, whilst some places could see 30-40 mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms," the forecaster said. "Frequent lightning, hail and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards."



In its forecast for this Saturday, the agency said showers are expected to become widespread across England and Wales, often heavy and accompanied by hail and thunder. In and Northern Ireland, rain will be more scattered and will generally ease from the west as the day progresses.



The Met Office's outlook for Sunday to Tuesday reads: "A drier day on Sunday, before further rain and showers, mainly in the north, on Monday and Tuesday. Often breezy and feeling rather cool."
