A shocking and unusual case has emerged from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where a woman has accused her in-laws of demanding one of her kidneys as a form of dowry. While dowry demands for money, vehicles, gold, and property are unfortunately not uncommon in India despite being illegal, this particular demand has left many astonished.
The complainant, identified as Deepti, has filed a report at the Muzaffarpur women's police station. Currently residing at her maternal home, Deepti recounted her ordeal to the police, stating that she was married in 2021 into a family residing in the Bochaha police station area of Muzaffarpur.
According to Deepti's complaint, the initial period of her marriage was without incident. However, after some time, her in-laws allegedly began to mentally torture her and subject her to physical abuse, pressuring her to bring money, a motorcycle, and jewelry as dowry.
When Deepti resisted these demands, the alleged pressure escalated. She claims her in-laws then began to compel her to donate one of her kidneys to her ailing husband. Deepti stated that she only learned about her husband's kidney disease two years into their marriage. She further alleged that she was beaten and tortured when she refused this demand.
Following the alleged abuse, Deepti returned to her parents' home and lodged the complaint. Police attempted to mediate a compromise between the two parties, but these efforts were unsuccessful. Deepti has also sought a divorce from her husband, but he has reportedly refused.
A case has been registered under section 38/25 at the women's police station, naming four individuals from her in-laws' side, including her husband, as accused.
