Shreyas iyer: In IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer has once again proved the ability of his captaincy by reaching Punjab Kings to the finals. Iyer, who has been fighting this team for the first time since 2014 and making runners -up, has now joined the next captaincy race of the Indian cricket team.
According to reports, Iyer’s brilliant leadership and batting form have caught the attention of the top officials of BCCI. After retiring from veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20 and Tests, now Indian cricket is going through a change of change, so Shreyas’s name has come out prominently in the search of the new captain.
According to media reports, Iyer has now officially made a place in the race for the captaincy of the white ball. A BCCI officer said, "Right now he only plays ODIs, but after this IPL we cannot keep him out of T20 International and Test. Also, he has now officially joined the race for white ball captaincy."
Currently Suryakumar Yadav is handling the captaincy of the T20I team, while Rohit Sharma is the captain of the ODI team. Shubman Gill has recently captained the Test team and white balls are vice-captains in cricket. Shreyas Iyer has also contributed to white ball cricket as a stand-in vice-captain.
In recent years, Iyer has not been regularly involved in India’s Test or T20 team. But in view of his recent form and leadership skills, the selectors can now consider inclusion of him in the Test team. Especially when Team India is in the era of transition, the need of experienced and solid batsmen like Iyer is being felt.
Shreyas Iyer started the captaincy in IPL in 2018 with Delhi Capitals. In 2019, he took the team to the playoffs and took Delhi to its first IPL final in 2020.
After this, in the 2022 mega auction, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and in 2024 he got KKR a decade later after a decade. Surprisingly, KKR did not retain him despite winning the title.
In IPL 2025, Punjab Kings bought Shreyas Iyer at a heavy price of ₹ 26.75 crore and under his captaincy the team reached the final for the first time after 2014. However, in the title match, the team lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
