Tata Sons' Response to Air India Tragedy

On Thursday, N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons, announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of each individual who lost their life in the recent Air India crash. The company will also cover medical expenses for the injured and ensure they receive the necessary care.



Official Statement from Tata Group

The Tata Group expressed their sorrow on social media, stating, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving Air India Flight 171. Words cannot fully convey our grief at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and those injured. Tata Group will provide ₹1 crore to the families of each victim. We will also take care of medical expenses for the injured and ensure they receive all necessary support. Furthermore, we will assist in the development of the B J Medical's hostel. We stand firmly with the affected families and communities during this difficult time." - N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons.



Prime Minister Modi's Condolences

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his profound sorrow regarding the tragic event in Ahmedabad, describing it as "heartbreaking beyond words." In a post on social media, he extended his condolences and promised support for those impacted. PM Modi has been actively monitoring the situation and is in regular contact with state officials.


He stated, "The tragedy in Ahmedabad has shocked and saddened us all. It is truly heartbreaking. My thoughts are with everyone affected. I have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those impacted."



Details of the Air India Flight Incident

Air India confirmed that Flight AI171, which was headed to Gatwick in London, was involved in an accident shortly after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.


The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was carrying 242 individuals, including 12 crew members, crashed shortly after takeoff, impacting a doctors' hostel near the airport's perimeter.


Among the 230 passengers, there were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.



Flight Crew Information

The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who has accumulated 8,200 hours of flying experience, alongside First Officer Clive Kundar, who has 1,100 hours of experience. According to Air Traffic Control, the aircraft took off from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It issued a Mayday call but subsequently failed to respond to ATC communications. The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in heavy black smoke observed at the accident site.
