The Gold has had BBC viewers gripped once again, after the second series began airing earlier this month.
The broadcaster tipped the second instalment of the crime drama as "unpredictable" and "surprising." It hasn't disappointed and has proven to be a huge hit with TV fans.
The Gold is inspired by the true events of 1983, during the Brink's-Mat robbery, and the story that followed the crime. The first instalment of The Gold aired in 2023.
After the first episode of the second series aired, TV viewers were quick to share their thoughts on social media, and many were keen to find out if a third series of the hit show was due to be created.
"Series 2 of #TheGold is SO good! Damn. Like it even better than series 1!!" one fan wrote on X, with another saying: "I hope we get a third series of #TheGold."
Another added: "Nicki Jennings, where is your spin-off gurl! Absolute need #TheGold @BBC @mrneilforsyth," while somebody else penned: "I need another series of #TheGold already."
Will there be a third series of The Gold?Unfortunately for The Gold fans, the second series has been confirmed as the final instalment of the hit show.
The series two finale concludes the story of the Brink's-Mat robbery, with police failing to recover most of the gold stolen in the "crime of the century." Less than $60,000 (£44k) of the $2.7 million (£2m) stolen was ever found.
Eight of the 11 people involved in the robbery received life sentences after the trial, while two others died before they could be convicted.
Neil Forsyth, creator, writer, and executive producer of The Gold, has spoken out on the possibility of a third season being made, and it's bad news for fans.
"I always saw The Gold as a two-series show, following the two halves of the gold, so this will be the final series," he confirmed.
The full synopsis for The Gold season two tells us: "Following multiple court cases and convictions of some of those involved in the theft and handling of the Brink's-Mat gold, the police realised that they had only ever been on the trail of half of the money.
"Series two is inspired by some of the theories around what happened to the other half of the money. As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime.
"The Brink's-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police."
The Gold series one and two are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
