Tata Motors Refreshes Safari with New Petrol Powertrain
The Tata Motors Safari has long been a popular choice among consumers, but it has started to show its age against rivals in the D segment. In response to declining interest in the model, Tata is planning to revamp its lineup by introducing a new petrol engine option. Previously, both the Safari and Harrier were equipped solely with a 2.0-liter diesel engine sourced from Stellantis.
Recent spy images suggest that Tata is testing a new 1.5L T GDI Turbo Petrol Engine. This camouflaged test vehicle was spotted recently, indicating that the introduction of petrol variants could allow Tata to price its SUVs more competitively against other market players.
Upcoming Petrol Engine Specifications Tata Harrier Petrol Spotted Testing
According to reports, this new petrol engine is still in development and is expected to debut soon, potentially in the Tata Sierra. The engine will power the new Safari, Harrier, and the upcoming Sierra EV. It is anticipated to be a 4-cylinder, 1.5 Turbo petrol engine featuring direct gasoline injection technology, delivering a peak power output of 170 PS and a torque of 278 Nm. These performance metrics are expected to be competitive with the Mahindra 2.0L Turbo Petrol Engine.
Enhanced Diesel Engine on the Horizon
In addition to the petrol engine, Tata Motors has recently secured development rights for a new 2.0L Turbo Diesel Engine. There are rumors of a powerful 180 Bhp variant with a peak torque of 40 Nm. While Tata has yet to confirm specifics about this new engine, it is clear that mechanical updates will also be applied to the petrol version of the Safari.
