With everything the island of Ibiza has to offer - including postcard-perfect beaches and bustling towns - it's not hard to see why it has become one of Spain's most popular tourist destinations. However, with the Balearic Island now seeing over three million tourists each year, its success is now starting to take its toll.

Ibiza has begun to implement measures to curb overtourism, including a daily limit on tourist vehicles and stricter rules for those arriving by ferry. It has also tightened restrictions on alcohol sales in certain areas, particularly party zones, with fines for drinking in public outside designated areas. Luckily for tourists still wanting to experience life in the Balearics, there is a beautiful alternative just a short distance away that has everything Ibiza has to offer - but without the crowds.

Just south of Ibiza lies the pretty island of Formentera, which covers an area of only 31 square miles. According to Lonely Planet, Formentera is a "beautifully pure, get-away-from-it-all-escape", with a slow pace of life and perfect for those dreaming of lazy days spent on the beach.

Its best-known beach is Playa de Ses Illetes, located on the northern tip of the island, a stretch of coast that is renowned for its pristine white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It is so impressive that it has even been named as Travellers' Choice's Best of the Best.

After a day in the sun, head into one of Formentera's charming towns, such as Sant Francesc Xavier, for a meal at El Mirador restaurant, where you can enjoy stunning views of the island and the Mediterranean Sea.

In the height of summer, temperatures stay around 30C on the island, while it boasts an average 11 hours of sunshine per day.

Formentera does not have its own airport, helping it maintain its hidden gem status compared to Ibiza. As such, the only way for tourists to visit the island is by boat from Ibiza. Direct flights with airlines including British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 are available from most UK airports.

You can then catch a ferry from Ibiza, which run frequently and take around 30 minutes.
