Netflix's gripping documentary series, Trainwreck, delves into events that spiralled disastrously out of control, with the latest episode focusing on a luxury cruise ship's ill-fated journey to Mexico in 2013.

Trainwreck: Poop Cruise, released today (June 24), tells the tale of the Carnival Triumph, which quickly descended into chaos after an engine fire severed power cables, plunging the entire ship into darkness.

The failure of lights and air conditioning was bad enough, but it was the inability to flush toilets that proved the most catastrophic consequence.

Despite being instructed to urinate in showers and defecate in red biohazard bags, passengers soon found themselves navigating through corridors flooded with sewage, particularly as the ship rocked while stranded in the Gulf of Mexico.

Among the thousands of passengers was Ashley, who was celebrating her hen party with two friends. The American recounted a moment from the trip that has remained "etched" in her memory.

"I was getting married, it was my bachelorette party. We decided that a cruise would be a fun way to celebrate," she says in the documentary," adding: "This was absolutely the bachelorette party I had dreamed of."

A few days into their voyage, an alarm sounding in the cabins woke the group, signalling an engine room fire. Ashley remembered: "I remember opening my eyes and looking around, pitch black, like 'What is going on?'"

She vividly recalls the harrowing moment she realised her cruise ship was ablaze, recounting: "Once we got up to the Lido Deck, the first thing I remember seeing, it's etched in my brain, was seeing the big red fin. There were flames just shooting out of it - and that's really when I woke up and was like 'Oh s***, the ship is on fire."

The engine room fire marked the beginning of a disastrous ordeal, with food supplies dwindling and passengers informed they could no longer use their toilets.

Upon spotting the red bags, Ashley's heart sank as she realised the gravity of the situation, prompting her to take preventative measures: "As soon as I saw the red bags, I was like 'Oh no, oh no.' I immediately started taking Imodium," she admitted.

Queuing for food became a two-hour ordeal, only to be met with disappointment at the sight of unappetising meals: "You would have to wait in line for two hours [for food], but when you got up to see what it was you were waiting on, it was like soggy bread and a tomato lettuce sandwich."

Despite the distressing events, Ashley managed to inject some humour into her wedding day by gifting her bridesmaids with presents wrapped in red biohazard bags, adorned with a pretty ribbon, as a cheeky nod to the cruise mishap.
