“It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to Camilo Nuin, a reserve team player, who passed away this morning,” San Telmo, a second-division club in Argentina, announced on Wednesday. “We stand with Nuin’s family and his loved ones in this difficult moment. His legacy will remain with the team forever.”
Nuin, a left-footed midfielder who often wore the number 10 shirt, played 82 games for San Telmo’s reserve team. Born in Padua, Greater Buenos Aires, Nuin trained with the youth teams of Boca Juniors and Independiente before joining San Telmo in 2022. At the time of his passing, San Telmo was 11th in Group B of Argentina’s second division.
According to La Nacion, Nuin underwent knee surgery to reconstruct ligaments and the meniscus, a common but serious injury in football. Typically, players recovering from such procedures require at least nine months before returning to the pitch.
The news of Nuin’s death shocked many, with some expressing disbelief that a player could die during knee surgery in the modern era.
One Reddit user commented: “This is tragic. How can people still die during knee surgery these days? It’s horrible. Rest in peace.”
Another user speculated: “The only explanation I can think of is that he had a bad reaction to the general anesthesia. No further information is available at the moment.”
Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia also issued a statement expressing “deep sadness” and offering condolences to Nuin’s family and San Telmo.
The cause of Nuin’s death remains unknown, as authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy.
