India has taken a big step toward secure and efficient travel documentation with the nationwide rollout of biometric e-passports. Announced by External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar on June 24, the move is part of the upgraded Passport Seva Programme (PSP) 2.0, aimed at enhancing passport delivery through technology and better governance.

What is an E-Passport?

An e-passport is a modern travel document that combines traditional passport features with a secure electronic chip embedded in the front cover. This chip, powered by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, stores personal identification details as well as biometric data like fingerprints, facial image, and iris scans.

These passports are fully compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, making them compatible with automated systems across over 120 countries. The chip enables touch-free scanning, allowing for faster and more secure immigration processing at airports.

Key Benefits of E-Passports

  • Encrypted Chip Storage: Personal and biometric data is stored securely, reducing the risk of forgery and tampering.

  • Biometric Verification: Captures and stores key identifiers, ensuring secure identification.

  • Contactless Processing: RFID-based chip allows wireless, quick scans at e-gates and counters.

  • Global Compatibility: Recognised internationally under ICAO guidelines for seamless travel.

  • Better User Experience: Minimises wait times and enhances overall convenience at immigration desks.

How to Apply for an E-Passport

The process to apply for an e-passport is user-friendly and almost identical to applying for a traditional passport.

Step 1: Access the Passport Seva Portal
Visit the official website – www.passportindia.gov.in

Step 2: Create an Account or Sign In
First-time users must register; returning users can log in with existing credentials.

Step 3: Fill the Application
Select “Apply for Fresh Passport” or “Re-issue of Passport” and choose the e-passport option, available at supported Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) or Regional Passport Offices (RPOs).

Step 4: Choose a Service Location
Pick your nearest PSK, POPSK (Post Office PSK), or RPO where e-passport services are available.

Step 5: Make the Payment
Pay the required fee online using debit/credit card, internet banking, or SBI challan. A fee calculator is available on the portal.

Step 6: Schedule an Appointment
Select a date and time for your visit to the selected centre for biometric data collection and document verification.

Step 7: Visit the Passport Centre
On the day of the appointment, carry original documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card, birth certificate, and proof of address. Biometric data such as fingerprints and a facial photo will be captured at the centre.

Additional Options and Information

  • Tatkaal Services: Available for urgent applications, including e-passports, at selected centres. Requires extra documentation and higher fees.

  • Overseas Applications: Indian citizens abroad can apply through Indian embassies or consulates under the Passport Seva System.

  • Existing Passports Valid: Current passports remain valid until expiry. New applicants and those renewing at supported centres will receive e-passports.
