Cleaning fan and author Lynsey Crombie recently appeared on This Morning to share her miracle home remedy for removing stains from white clothes. As the sun continues to shine, many may opt for lighter coloured or white clothes.

But if you find your white clothes have been stained, then you may think again. While many people tip baking soda to be a useful home remedy, Lynsey, more commonly known as the Queen of Clean, recommended another item which works just as well. You probably already have some in your bathroom.

How to remove stains from white clothes

Lynsey explained: "I just tried this years ago on a pair of my son's denim shorts, so white toothpaste. Don't go and get the blue one, because you're just gonna make a mess."

She went on to explain why white toothpaste works well at removing stains, as it contains a highly touted ingredient. She continued: "White toothpaste has got bicarbonate of soda in it, so it's pretty much the same as we've got there."

In a demonstration, Lysney showed off how she removes dark stains from whites. She initially wets the affected area with water before applying the toothpaste to the stain.

Rub in the toothpaste with a small brush. Lynsey then instructed to leave the toothpaste to sit for between 10 to 15 minutes.

Once the time is up, place the stained clothes into the washing machine on a cold cycle. Lynsey promises white clothes will come out "beautifully".

She continued: "Be liberal and don't go and buy a really expensive one. 40p in like one of the major supermarkets. Keep it in your cupboard, rub it in and then just leave that for a bit.

"And you will find, if you come back in half an hour, cold rinse, that would have started to go."

Toothpaste can be an effective stain removal remedy due to its abrasive and mild cleaning properties. It also contains detergents and surfactants that help break down and lift away grease and dirt.

However it's important to not use toothpastes, which contain whitening ingredients, on dark or coloured clothes. There is a possibility that the bleaching agents could remove the colour.

Bella Zinti, home builder at The Homey Space, told Homes & Gardens: "You'll be surprised that toothpaste is way more versatile than you think. Because of its powerful yet harmless ingredients, you can clean most things with it.

"By using a more abrasive brush and your toothpaste, you can remove stains from surfaces like walls, upholstery, and carpets in place of harsh household cleaning products."

Toothpaste isn't just useful for removing stains from clothes, but also on other surfaces. Muffettas Domestic Assistants, Muffetta Krueger, told Homes & Gardens: "Toothpaste is a surprisingly effective stain remover for fabrics and carpets. Whether it's a coffee spill, ink mark, or scuff on the walls, toothpaste can often work its magic to erase these stubborn blemishes."
