Lettuce is easy to grow, even in pots or a small space such as a window ledge, or you can bed the salad into prepared garden beds - and enjoy your freshly grown greens fairly quickly.

You maybe already growing some lettuce in your outdoor space - and if you're not, there are several types of this versatile salad leaf that will grow all-year-round - and it'll taste much better than shop bought lettuce.

There's even a perfect time of day to pick the lettuce you've grown, to enjoy the sweetest tasting salad leaves.

If you're starting out growing lettuce plants from seed, you'll be able to pick a variety of types for an array of colour, texture and taste.

Gardeners' World advised on growing lettuce and explained that by growing several variations "you'll have all the ingredients you need for a delicious, colourful salad".

On the website, Gardeners' World explained: "It's much cheaper to grow your own lettuce than buy bags of lettuce from the shops, and the variety of lettuce you can grow versus shop-bought lettuce is greater, too."

Whether you've got lettuce already growing, or if you're ready to sow some this summer, the plants will take about 10 weeks to be ready for your dinner plate.

Some types of lettuce can be grown through all the seasons, with certain types of lettuce preferring cooler weather or some shade - and all lettuce varieties tend to germinate better when not in full sun.

On the Gardeners' World website's 'how to grow lettuce' advice, the experts suggest sowing the seeds on "moist, well-prepared soil or compost".

They also advise covering the seeds when sown with "a very thin layer of compost or vermiculite".

You'll need to make sure slugs and snails are kept at bay too, as these pests love the tiny seedlings.

Once the seedlings pop through, you'll need to thin them out and make sure the soil is kept moist.

Lettuce can take up to 10 weeks to grow, but some varieties will be ready to pick after just six weeks.

Loose leaf lettuce types will be ready to pick sooner, these include varieties that do not grow in a compact form, such as Lollo Rossa, Mazurosso and Bijou types.

You can even pick baby leaves before full growth on most lettuce types if you don't want to wait.

So once you've grown your lettuce, be it in pots or garden beds, you'll be getting the best taste if you pick your salad leaves in the morning, gardening experts say.

The Gardeners' World website gave advice to keep your supplies going: "For a steady supply of lettuces, sow seed every 14 days from March through to September."

On picking your salad, Gardeners' World said: "Start picking baby loose-leaf lettuces at six weeks, at 10 weeks for hearting (dense head) types.

"In hot weather you'll notice a difference in the succulence of your lettuce according to the time of day they're picked.

"They're best in the early morning, before the leaves dehydrate in the sun."
