Brad Pitt recently opened up about how he and Tom Cruise were once attached to star in Ford v Ferrari long before Matt Damon and Christian Bale brought the story to life in 2019. The actor explained that the duo opted out of the project because Cruise realized his character wouldn’t be doing much driving.
Why the Pitt-Cruise Version Didn’t Happen
Speaking to The National, Pitt revealed that he and Cruise were set to collaborate on the racing drama with director Joe Kosinski nearly a decade before James Mangold took over. “Tom and I, for a while there, were on Ford v Ferrari. What it came down to is that we both wanted to drive,” Pitt explained. Cruise was interested in playing Carroll Shelby, while Pitt was set to portray racer Ken Miles. However, Cruise ultimately backed out when he found out Shelby’s role didn’t involve much driving.
Pitt’s Thoughts on Working with Cruise Again
Pitt, who last worked with Cruise in 1994’s Interview with the Vampire, is open to teaming up again—but on one condition. Speaking to E! News, he joked, “I’m not gonna hang my a** off airplanes and s*** like that,” referencing Cruise’s famous stunt work. “So when he does something again that’s on the ground [then yes].”
