Former Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson made a heartfelt trip to Anfield to honour the memory of colleague Diogo Jota. The Reds forward tragically passed away with his brother, Andre Silva, in a fatal car crash on Thursday (July 3) whilst travelling in northern Spain.

Emergency services arrived on the scene shortly after midnight but both Jota and his brother, who also had footballing ties as a player for Portuguese side Penafiel, were confirmed to have passed away.

Their bodies were then taken to Portugal that evening with their wake taking place in Gondomar the following morning (July 4) and the funeral arranged for Saturday (July 6).

Since the tragic news emerged, Anfield has become a shrine of mourning, with numerous fans laying flowers to remember a cherished member of Arne Slot's title-winning squad.

Anfield has opened a book of condolences, and among the masses in attendance was Henderson, who led Liverpool to heights including the coveted Champions League and Premier League titles from 2019 to 2022, who arrived to pay his respects to his late teammate.

Henderson, who played alongside Jota for three years, joined supporters in grief outside the stadium on Friday. He placed a tribute wreath bearing the poignant note: "Rest in peace my friend, along with your brother Andre. We will all miss you. Love Hendo + family xx".

Henderson paid an emotional tribute on his Instagram as well, writing: "I really can't believe what has happened today and all I can think about is Diogo and Andre's family.

"It's unimaginable the pain you all must be suffering. All of our prayers, love and support are with you now and forever.

"Jots it was a pleasure to share a pitch with you but more importantly a friendship. All the laughs we had off the pitch and trying to find ways to wind milly [James Milner] up and get him fined, which we never could.

"Taking pictures of me asleep on the bus travelling then sending them to me later. You always wanted to have a laugh and were a pleasure to be around. I know how much Rute (wife) and your family meant to you and I know you will always be looking down on them. Thank you for everything you brought into this world, we will all miss you. Rest in peace along with your brother Andre. Love ya mate. YNWA."
