A beautiful garden is something every homeowner would like to create, but it can often come with many obstacles when it comes to planting flowers and crops. While many dream of having an outdoor space with vibrant and colourful plants, achieving that goal whilst having poor-quality soil can feel impossible.

Fortunately, that couldn't be further from the case. There are plenty of plants that look, smell and feel great whilst thriving in poor-quality soil. So whether you're on the search for some low-effort flowers, new at gardening, or simply struggling to make the most out of the space you have then, according to garden experts at Nth Degree, a luxury outdoor furniture company, these five plants are the perfect ones for you.

Rudbeckia hirta (Black-eyed Susan)

The flower's nickname comes from its bold, bright orange and yellow petals and deep brown centres. Rudbeckia will bring that well-needed pop of summer colour to your garden. The flower is suitable for dry, low-fertility soils and can be planted all year round.

Echinacea (Coneflower)

This flower that is loved by both gardeners and polliantors is the perfect way to encourage biodiversity in your garden. Echinacea's large, daisy-like flowers come in a variety of colours such as pink, white, red and orange. They have the ability to tolerate dry soil and need lots of sun.

Festuca glauca (Blue Fescue)

Thanks to its incredible ice-blue leaves, this ornamental grass will add a modern edge and unique texture to gardens. It works well in lean or light soil and can even tolerate drought and winter chills.

Sedum (Stonecrop)

Sedums make a superb addition to garden borders. They love the sun and can also tolerate drought, which is why they are great for gardens with 'bad' soil. In fact, this plant is so perfect for poor-quality soil that fertile soils have a negative impact on it. Rich soils will encourage soft, leafy stems that are liable to fall over.

Verbena rigida (Slender Vervain)

These low-growing plants birth the most beautiful purple flowers that draw bees and butterflies from everywhere, earning it the Plants for Pollinators award from the RHS. Slender Vervains are a great addition to your outdoor space if the soil's quality isn't up to scratch as that's how they thrive. Plant them in a dry, sunny spot to edge paths where you have poor-quality soil.
