Weather warmings have been issued for parts of Majorca with storms forecast to hit the popular holiday island over the next 24 hours. Much of Spain has been sweltering in extreme hot weather, with the mercury rising into the high 30Cs.

However, meteorologists issued yellow alerts for storms and heavy rain in the north and northeast of Majorca on Monday. The heavy rain is expected to extend to Ibiza and Formentera from early Tuesday morning.

The stormy weather is causing sea swells, with waves up to four metres forecast.

In light of the rough seas, the Directorate-General for Emergencies has advised the public to avoid promenades, breakwaters and cliffs.

The agency warned of the real and high danger of being swept out to sea by the force of the breaking waves.

People are also urged not to engage in water sports and to secure their boats.

From midnight, yellow alerts will come into force for coastal phenomena in the Serra de Tramuntana, the north and north-east of Majorca and Menorca.

The Regional Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle has said it is closing the buoy fields in Formentor, Bahía de Fornells and the island of Colom due to the bad weather warnings.

Earlier on Monday, heavy rain swept through the centre, east, north and north-east of Majorca.

In the Pla region, the intensity of the downpour reached up to 30 litres per square metre, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

Video images posted to social media channels show rivers of water gushing down a street, as the freak storm hit.

Despite the cooler weather in the Balearics, much of Spain continues to brace for extreme heat.

A number of holiday hotspots are expecting extreme high temperatures of up to 40C this week.

AEMET has warnings in place for Seville, Alicante, Majorca, Madrid and Girona.
