James Gunn’s recent comments about Supergirl could mean bad news for Krypto fans.

Following the release of Superman, the next theatrically released DCU movie will be Supergirl, which arrives in June 2026. The Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios film comes from director Craig Gillespie and Ana Nogueira.

The movie is based on the Tom King and Bilquis Evely Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow miniseries, which launched at DC Comics in 2021. In the first issue of Woman of Tomorrow, Krypto, Kara, and Ruthye Marye Knoll are attacked by Krem of the Yellow Hills, which results in Krypto becoming seriously injured.

What did James Gunn say about Supergirl and Krypto?

During the press tour for Superman, stars María Gabriela de Faría and Sara Sampaio confirmed that a scene where Ultraman punches Krypto was removed from the movie after it “did really bad in test screenings.”

When asked by RollingStone if the Supergirl movie would include the Krypto moments from the comics or if that wasn’t going to happen because it would be too dark or scary for a DCU film, Gunn said, “Remember, this is a different movie than Supergirl. Supergirl is a way more rock & roll film. It’s a little bit rougher, in certain ways. She’s a tougher character. She’s not Superman at all. And so it’s not the same. This movie really is for everybody. And so is Supergirl, but it’s a little bit edgier in some ways than this film. Mind you, I’ve seen all the dailies, but I haven’t seen the cut. I see it next week, I think. So I’m very excited about that.”

The cast of Supergirl includes Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruth Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, and Jason Momoa as Lobo.

Supergirl hits United States theaters on June 26, 2026.
